Romania has over € 5 billion available in the framework of the European Commission’s Large Infrastructure Operational Program (LIOP), and in order to efficiently absorb this amount, there is a need for realistic planning, thorough preparation and efficient implementation of transport projects, European Commissioner for Regional Development, Corina Creţu said.

Romanian citizens must have better access to roads, rail services and other public transport connections, as soon as possible, European Commissioner stated in a meeting in Brussels with Romanian Transport Minister Felix Stroe, according to the EC Representation in Bucharest.

In this respect, it is very important for the sustainability of the Romanian transport sector that the process of reform and reorganization in the railway and road sectors continues and accelerates, Corina Creţu added.

The Large Infrastructure Operational Programme (LIOP) - co-financed through the European Regional Development Fund and the Cohesion Fund - aims at promoting sustainable economic growth as well as safe and efficient use of natural resources. It addresses the development challenges identified at national level in terms of transport infrastructure, sustainable urban transport, environment, energy and risk prevention. The programme will mainly invest in removing the main transport bottlenecks and developing sustainable, efficient and green transport modes in the country. Another strong focus lies on measures to increase energy efficiency and protect natural resources. It also invests in environment infrastructure and risk prevention.
