Debate in the plenary sitting of the European Parliament on Romania’s Priorities for the Presidency of the EU Council has been marked by numerous encouragements but also harsh criticism on violation of the rule of law and the backward steps in the fight against corruption in Romania.

While Andrus Ansip, Vice-President of the European Commission for the Digital Single Market, said on behalf of European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker that he is delighted to be present when Romania takes over the Presidency of the European Union, Guy Verhofstadt, leader of the ALDE group in the European legislature, said that Romania is not far from activating Article 7, just like Poland and Hungary.

This idea was rejected by Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă at a joint press conference with the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, who reaffirmed support of the European Parliament for the Presidency of Romania at the Council of the European Union.

RRA Reporter Clementina Tudor, Strasbourg: President Tajani unconditionally supports Romania's Presidency of the Council of the EU and has called for concerted efforts to achieve a good deal on the migration package. With regard to Brexit and the European Elections, it is crucial to achieve good legislative results in order to send accurate messages to European citizens before the European Parliament elections, Antonio Tajani said. In turn, Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă said that Romania is ready to take over all the 242 files waiting for urgent solutions and that there will be an answer for this new situation, Brexit, but also for post-Brexit, through common policies of cohesion, of foreign defense, which require consensus that Romania hopes to achieve in the six months of its mandate. All these regulations and harmonization between Member States will be presented at the EU Summit in Sibiu, when the future of the EU will emerge.
